Demonstrators
Seminar 2010, Armagh
From England, Andrew Hall
Born in 1961 Andrew has had a passion for working with wood from the age of seven when he disappeared into
the yard shed and produced a pair of table tennis bats from an old table top, a hack saw and some sandpaper.
He continued his love for woodworking whilst serving a five year apprenticeship with Blue Circle Industries
at Weardale.
My first influence in woodturning was at the age of 14 when the woodwork teacher then an
evolutionary man gave freely of his time evenings to educate three very keen students in woodworking,
furniture making and woodturning. To this day we have remained in touch and have all carved our careers in
wood associated business.
Over the last six years Andrew has had the opportunity to practice the craft of woodturning on a
daily basis. He specialises in making full size wood hats known as a gallon and three other sizes quart, pint
and gill, I turn conventional bowls, natural edged vessels and staircase spindles.
Andrew demonstrates the craft of woodturning to woodturning clubs, craft fairs, country fairs,
women’s institute groups, Arts Centres and countryside agency groups.
He is also the founder and chairman of Wear Valley Woodturners and writes articles for
woodturning magazines.
From England, Carlyn
Lindsay

Working with wood is something Carlyn has have enjoyed since she was quite young. At art school she experienced
working with many mediums and materials but wood just kept taking me in, so I got on with it. This is when I
started laminating….and turning. I left art school in 1985 with a BA Hons degree in wood, metal & plastics.
In 1989 with a grant from the Princes Youth Business Trust I set up workshop as a designer/maker in wood.
Carlyn’s speciality is laminated wood with which she makes a range of one off contemporary and
mainly functional objects including: bowls, pots, boxes and walking sticks. She makes cutlery and letter
opener handles as well as other functional items, in small batches. Carlyn’s inspiration comes from
architecture, linear structures and natural forms.
Carlyn’s work is regularly exhibited, she is a Registered Professional Turner. Most recently
she won a bursary award from the Worshipful Company of Turners.

Artist
Statement:
"I am
passionate about my craft and the American Craft movement. I am dedicated to producing quality craft and
educating the public about woodturning. My wood comes from urban sources (tree trimmers and local cities).
I produce all my work on the lathe without any embellishments’ after the fact, creating a very traditional feel
with contemporary ideas. I want my work to be attractive as well as useful. For my work to be
admired is one thing, but for my work to be used fulfills my purpose as a craftsman."
"Americans will habitually prefer the useful to the beautiful and they will require that the
beautiful be useful."
- Alexis De Tocqueville, Democracy in America (1840)
